Krakow was the capital of Poland until 1918, when the country gained independence and this honour went to Warsaw. Now, despite no longer being the administrative and financial hub of the country, Krakow has become a cultural centre, having been awarded the European Capital of Culture in 2000.
The city counts 28 museums in total, and the art galleries attract more than seven million people annually. Thirsty art lovers can quench their need in one of the city’s many bars, in fact the town centre boasts more bars per square metre than any city centre in the world.
