Latvia is situated on the east coast of the Baltic Sea and occupies around 65,000 square km. Sitting on the eastern side of the Northern European Plain there are few areas of highland as you would expect.
Latvia shares much of its culture with Lithuania and in 2010 remains one of the poorest countries in the European Union.
