Just an hour away from Frankfurt, Heidelberg is a popular tourist destination. Home to the country’s oldest University dating back to 1386, and 1.6km of quaint cobbled streets, there is plenty of history to bask in.
The old town features mostly Baroque architecture and fortunately is well preserved despite the Second World War bombings, unlike some of the nearby towns. The castle attracts many visitors, as do the surrounding vineyards.
An influx of students come to Heidelberg to attend the University, and oddly enough the town also has an American army base.
